The government is working on drafting a law for the appointment of High Court judges and it will be tabled in Parliament in a few days.
Law Minister Anisul Haque made this announcement in response to opposition Jatiya Party (JAPA) and Gano Forum parliamentarians while discussing the passage of Bangladesh Supreme Court Judges (Leave, Pension and Benefits) Bill-2023 on Monday (January 5).
Members of Parliament from Japa and Ganaforum while participating in the passage of the bill demanded that the government enact a much-desired law to appoint judges to the high courts.

Mokabbir Khan, Member of Parliament of the People's Forum elected from Sylhet, said that according to the Constitution, the President now appoints judges to the High Court. He said, "In the appointment of judges, disqualification is mentioned, but the eligibility criteria is not mentioned. In this case, if a specific law is made for the appointment of judges, there will be no chance to question the appointment.

Pir Fazlur Rahman, an elected JAPA member of parliament from Sunamganj, said that there is no law to appoint an election commissioner. He said, "This law was passed last year and 1 new election commission was constituted on the basis of this law." He said, similarly, there was supposed to be a law for the appointment of High Court judges, but it has not yet happened. He said, in sufficient cases, appointments are made for political considerations. Fakhrul Imam, another MP elected from Mymensingh, also made the same claim.
