Earlier on January 12, the party's general secretary Obaidul Quader raised the issue of making him deputy leader in the sixth meeting of the Awami League parliamentary party.
Awami League's parliamentary team secretary and Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury Liton supported it. After that, Matia Chowdhury was nominated as the Deputy Leader of the Parliament. Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, the deputy leader of the 11th National Assembly, died and was replaced by Matia Chowdhury.

According to the rules of the Parliament, no voting is required for the post of Deputy Leader of the Parliament. When the leader of the parliament conveys his opinion to the speaker, the speaker takes action accordingly. The name proposed by the Leader of Parliament after taking the opinion of the Members of the Parliamentary Party is sent to the President for approval. No commitment is required for this position. But the Deputy Leader of the Parliament gets the rank and privileges of the Minister.
According to parliamentary rules, there is no obligation to appoint a deputy leader of parliament. BNP has not nominated anyone for this post during their time. However, Awami League has always embellished this position by one of their senior leaders.

After coming to power in 2009, Awami League first elected Zillur Rahman as the deputy leader of parliament. He was also in charge in 96 period. Later he took oath as President. Sajeda Chowdhury became the deputy leader of parliament in February of that year. He was the deputy leader of the Awami League for three consecutive terms. Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury died on September 11 after a long illness. Sheikh Hasina usually chooses one of the senior leaders of the team.
