Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury is no more
The founder of the public health center Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury passed away (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raziun). He passed away at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in Dhanmondi at 11:15 PM on Tuesday (April 11). The public health center has not officially informed this news yet. In that case, it will be informed after a while.
Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu, convener of Bhasani Followers Parishad told Bangla Tribune, "Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury passed away at 11:15 pm on Tuesday. We will discuss and decide on the funeral. Zafrullah Chowdhury was born on December 27, 1941 in Koypara village of Raujan upazila of Chittagong district. His father Humayan Morshed Chowdhury was a police officer. Mother Hashina Begum Chowdhury was a housewife. Zafrullah Chowdhury was the eldest among the ten children of his parents.
Birth and education
Zafrullah was born on December 27, 1941 in Raujan of Chittagong district. His father's teacher was revolutionary Masterda Suryasen. He is the eldest among ten children of his parents. After matriculation from Navkumar School, Bakshibazar, Dhaka and Intermediate from Dhaka College, he passed MBBS from Dhaka Medical College in 1964 and FRCS from Royal College of Surgeons, Billet in 1967.
Contribution to the liberation war
While studying FRCS at the Royal College of Surgeons in Billet, when the war of independence of Bangladesh started, he returned to India from London without finishing the final phase and took part in the liberation war from Agartala's Melaghre training center and then Dr. Together with MA Mobin, he established and managed the 480-bed "Bangladesh Field Hospital" there. She imparted basic health knowledge to many women in the short period of time in which they served patients and her unprecedented service was later published in the world famous journal paper “Lancet”.
Awards and honors
He received the Freedom Award in 1977 in recognition of his unique contribution to population control. He also received Ramon Magsaysay (1985) from the Philippines and Right Lovelyhood (1992) known as an alternative Nobel from Sweden, 'International Health Hero' (2002) from the University of Berkeley, USA and an honorary doctorate from Canada for services to humanity. In 2021, Ahmed Sharif received the memorial award.
