Although the Awami League did not participate in the polls, the activists are supporting the five-time MP Ukil Sattar, who won each time with a grain of rice.
On December 11, Sattar also resigned like other BNP parliamentarians as part of the movement demanding an election-time caretaker government. However, he severed ties with the party to stand for the by-election in the vacant seat.
His main rival is thought to be the former president of Ashuganj Upazila BNP, Asif, whose whereabouts were not found even on the day of polling.
The family claimed that independent candidate Abu Asif Ahmed is 'missing' since January 27. Asif's wife Mehrun Nicha submitted a written request to the Returning Officer on Tuesday seeking to find and conduct fair elections.
However, Election Commissioner Anisur Rahman told reporters on Tuesday that he thinks that Asif himself has hidden himself.
Asif's wife Meherunnisa pointed to the police for her husband's disappearance, but Anichur says they have come to know that "no government forces are involved".
