'EC has nothing to do with NID except as a voter'
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said in Parliament explaining the rationale for vesting the National Identity Card (NID) under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Explaining the rationale behind placing the National Identity Card (NID) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said in Parliament that the Election Commission (EC) has no involvement in the use of NID in cases other than being a voter.

The Home Minister said this while replying to the question of Mokabbir Khan, Member of Parliament of the Public Forum, during the question and answer session in the National Parliament on Thursday (January 12). Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury presided over the question and answer table. Home Minister said that in 2007, 1 project was taken under the army to prepare error-free voter list. As a byproduct of this project, the National Identity Card program was launched. This was a temporary measure.

Stating that the scope of the national identity registration program has increased sufficiently, he said that the national identity registration program is not only relevant for voters or citizens over 18 years of age, but for all citizens. Besides, there is an obligation to use NID in various fields including opening bank accounts, job applications, utility connections, applications for various allowances under the government's social security program, and applications for obtaining special land. Being a voter is only one thing in it. The EC has no involvement in the use of NID in other cases.'

Mentioning that the national identity registration process is done under the executive department in almost all the countries of the world, the minister said, in view of reality, it should be under the executive department in Bangladesh like other countries. Due to this, the process of bringing under the security service department of the Ministry of Home Affairs is ongoing.
