According to an AFP report, Sri Lanka's Election Commission officials held a meeting on Friday. In a written announcement after that meeting, the commission said that due to the ongoing funding crisis, it is not possible to organize and vote for the local government elections on March 9. The next election schedule will be announced on March 3.
"We have already approached the Honorable Speaker (of Parliament) Mahinda Yaba Abeywardana for the necessary funds. Hopefully, he will take necessary steps in this regard.'
A petition was recently filed in Sri Lanka's Supreme Court to postpone local government elections until May. Thursday was the hearing on that petition; But the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing the next day after the decision, the commission postponed the election.
