1 woman dies in 2 minutes during pregnancy and childbirth
Maternal mortality has fallen by one-third in the last 20 years, but 1 woman dies every 2 minutes due to pregnancy or childbirth-related complications.
Maternal mortality rates fell significantly from 2000 to 2015, but remained roughly the same from 2016 to 2020, the international agency said. Maternal mortality has increased in some regions.
According to the report prepared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as some other organs of the United Nations, the overall maternal mortality rate has decreased by 34.3 percent over a period of 20 years. In 2000, 339 women died of complications during pregnancy or childbirth per 100,000. In 2020, this number decreased to 223 per lakh.
This means that in 2020, about 800 women of childbearing potential will die every day. In other words, one woman dies every two minutes.
According to the United Nations, Belarus has the highest rate of maternal mortality in Eastern Europe. In 20 years, the maternal mortality rate in the country has decreased by 95.5 percent. The top loser is Venezuela, a Latin American country.
Maternal mortality increased the most between 2000 and 2015 in the United States.
