Torture in EB: 5 students expelled, provost ordered to withdraw by High Court

The High Court ordered the expulsion of five students in connection with the brutal and inhuman torture of the Islamic University (EB) student Phulpari Khatun. At the same time, the court ordered the withdrawal of the provost of the hall concerned.

Besides, they have been asked to stay outside the campus. Along with this, the High Court has ordered to increase the CCTV monitoring of EB halls.

  The students who received the expulsion order are Sanjida Chowdhury Antara (Statistics Department, Session: 2017-2018), Halima Akhter Urmi (Fine Arts Department, Session: 2020-2021), Israt Jahan Mim (Law Department, Session: 2020-2021), Tabassum Islam ( Finance and Banking Department, Session: 2020-2021) and Muawiya Jahan (Finance and Banking Department, Session: 2020-2021). They have been asked to stay outside the campus.

Earlier, on Tuesday (February 28), Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Raziq Al Jalil submitted the report to the High Court bench and set the day for the order on Wednesday. The judicial investigation report was also published on this day.

The court order also said that the victim Phulpari should be allotted a seat within three days. In addition to ensuring his safety, the safety of the witnesses in this incident must be ensured.

Gazi Md. Mohsin, the petitioner lawyer, was in favor of the application in the court. Deputy Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy appeared for the state. Advocate Shah Manjurul Haque was on behalf of Islami University.

• Last February 11, from 11:00 pm to 3:00 am, the student was called to the common room of a hall of Islami University and tortured. The name of the tortured Chhatra League leader is Sanjida Chowdhury Antara. He is the Vice-President of the University Branch Chhatra League and a student of the 2017-18 academic year of the Department of Statistics. His colleague Tabassum is a 2020-21 academic year student of Finance and Banking Department. The victim girl is also a student of the same department in the academic year 2021-22.

In this regard, on February 14 at noon, the victim of torture made a written complaint to the proctor of the university, the provost of Sheikh Hasina Hall and the student advisor of the university.
In this incident, on February 15, the university branch of the Chhatra League formed a four-member investigation committee. The committee was asked to report within five working days. The investigation report of Chhatra League on Tuesday also found the truth of Phulpari's torture.
