Growing disparity in healthcare - the rich spend 8 times more than the poor

According to the latest data from the Health Ministry's Physical Economics Unit, 68.5 percent or two thirds of the medical expenses in the country are at the stage. Here the share of the government is only 23.1 percent. Which was 22.8 percent in 2015. The rest is for development partners.

Experts say that such a situation has arisen due to insufficient diagnostic facilities in government hospitals, shortage of essential drugs and unpreparedness to spend the health sector allocation.

Rich people spend 8 times more than low income people. In this, more than two-thirds of the expenditure on medical care is at the public level. Experts say, if necessary infrastructure, skilled manpower and accountability are ensured in medical services, this disparity will reduce quickly.

In this regard, the professor of the Institute of Health Economics of Dhaka University. Syed Abdul Hamid said that the government spending 23% of the budget means 37 thousand crore rupees is not enough according to the demand. We find very poor condition of diagnostic services in government hospitals. Again patients do not get enough compared to demand. That means the hospitals are still not able to serve the patients properly.

However, the body economy unit says that the pace of consumption of the people is slowing down lately. But, the rich tend to pay 8 times more than the low-income patients.

In this regard, the focal person of the Health Economics Unit. Subrata Pal said, if everyone wants to be treated by a professor in the state doctor's office, the crowd of patients will increase enough and it will take hours to meet the professor.

Dr. Subrata also said that those who have money and desire to spend will not wait so long. They will go to private hospital. In private hospitals like five star hotels, there are 10,000 taka bed rental rooms. The rich spend thousands of rupees by resorting to private hospital professors even if they have a minor cold and cough and poor patients cannot see a good doctor even for serious diseases.
