State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said that if Bengali is to be made the official language of the United Nations, 800 crore rupees should be spent every year. We have to consider whether it is reasonable to spend so much money.

He said this while facing reporters on Tuesday (21 February).

Ministry of External Affairs organized a discussion meeting and cultural program at the Foreign Service Academy on the occasion of Great Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam was the chief guest on the occasion.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs said that there are financial constraints to make the official language of the United Nations. To make Bengali the official language of the United Nations, 800 crore rupees should be spent every year. We have to consider whether it is reasonable to spend so much money. After independence, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina addressed the United Nations in Bengali. Now International Mother Language Day is being celebrated across the world. After Awami League came to power in 1996, there was a demand to observe International Mother Language Day. Later in 1999, it was recognized after proposing to UNESCO.


He said, 'We have taken the initiative to introduce Bengali language at all levels. We respect the languages of all, even the languages of the minority ethnic groups. Representatives of Bangladesh, Kenya, Russia, Nepal, Indonesia and Maldives participated in the cultural phase of the event.
