Revision of voter list for presidential elections: 6 new MPs added

Six newly elected Members of Parliament have been included as voters in the upcoming presidential election. The Election Commission (EC) has revised the voter list for the presidential election by including these six new MPs.

Six newly elected Members of Parliament have been included as voters in the upcoming presidential election. The Election Commission (EC) has revised the voter list for the presidential election by including these six new MPs.

The gazette in this regard was published on Thursday under the signature of Election Commission Secretary Jahangir Alam.

With the addition of six new MP voters, the total number of voters in the presidential election is 349. The EC first released the voter list on January 24 before the schedule of presidential elections. There were 343 voters.


According to Section 5(2) of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, 'All executive authorities of the Government shall assist the Commission in the discharge of its duties and for this purpose the President may, in consultation with the Commission, issue such directions as he may think necessary.'

At the moment, there is no indication from the top leadership of Awami League about who is going to be Abdul Hamid's successor. Party president Sheikh Hasina has not yet discussed this issue with her colleagues.

Due to this, the names of several potential presidents have come up in the discussions of Awami League leaders, workers and related parties. This matter has to be resolved in the ongoing session of the National Parliament which will end on February 9. As a result, the discussion became more heated.

Out of the 350 seats in the National Assembly, one seat (reserved 50/division 350) is vacant, so the electorate is 349. When Law Minister Anisul Haque was asked about this, he said on Wednesday that people will know very soon who will be the next president of the country.

He told reporters at the secretariat, 'Many names are heard before the election and many kinds of rumors are heard. According to the constitution, the election (for the next president) will be held 60 to 90 days before the end of the current president's 5-year term.'
