Director General (DG) of National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate (DG) AHM Safikuzzaman has directed that the sale of holy Zamzam water will be stopped in the entire country including Baitul Mukarram Market in the capital.

He said this after an exchange of views in the meeting room of the department on Monday morning.

Zamzam water

  • "In my opinion, Zamzam water is being sold illegally and it has been commercialized here," he said. Now the market committee will decide what to do about it. They will let us know by next Wednesday what can be done about it. Then we will decide. Sale of Zamzam water will be closed for the time being. Our intelligence agency will work there. If anyone sells in violation of the ban, the establishment will be sealed.

On Sunday (January 28), Zamzam well water was sold publicly for Tk 1,000 per liter in the capital. After the publication of the report in the news, the administration was shocked. The National Consumer Protection Directorate raided the market in the western part of Baitul Mukarram Mosque. Most of the traders fled after hearing the news of the raid. However, even if the truth of the incident was found that day, the mastermind could not be identified. Meanwhile, when the Islamic Foundation sought an answer to the question whether Zamzam water is salable or not, no answer was found there either. For this, the consumer department held a formal seminar with the traders on Monday morning.

Baitul Mukarram

  • Meanwhile, after learning that Zamzam water was being sold commercially in Baitul Mukarram Market yesterday, the National Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection conducted an operation. Abdul Jabbar Mandal, Assistant Director of the Directorate who led the operation, said, "Based on secret information, we observed the matter under cover after learning about it." Later, when asked about the price, the traders said that they are selling small bottles for 300 and 5 liters of water for 2,500. But they did not tell where the source of water is, who gave it. As a result we decide to take action on them

Deputy Director of National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate Atia Sultana, Shahnaz Sultana, Assistant Director Tahmina Begum, Rajbi Nahar Rajni, Abdul Jabbar Mandal and representatives of Baitul Mukarram Market owner-association and traders were also present in the discussion meeting.
