Despite the global crisis, there is good news in the export of goods
Exports of Bangladeshi garments have increased in the world market despite various crises including global recession. Garment exports increased by 15.56 percent in the first 6 months of the current financial year. One of the main export markets in the United States increased by 1.1 percent. In Germany, it increased by 3.54 percent.
BGMEA has compiled country-wise apparel export data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) monthly statistical report released recently. The organization said this information on Thursday (January 12).
According to EPB's monthly statistical report, the largest increase in apparel exports was in non-traditional markets. Out of this, garment exports to India increased by 50 percent, Japan by 42 percent and China by 15 percent.
According to statistics, Bangladesh's garment exports to the European Union increased by 16.61 percent to $11.5 billion during the July-December period of 2022-2023 fiscal year. Which was 987 million dollars in the same period of last financial year 2021-2022.
Among the EU's main markets, exports to Germany rose 3.54 percent to $345 billion over the same period last year. In the first six months of the current fiscal year 2022-2023, Spain and France grew by 17.62 and 33.8 percent respectively to $1.7 billion and $141 billion. During the same period, exports to Poland fell by 18.43 percent.
Bangladesh's garment exports to the United States stood at $4.27 billion in July-December 2022-2023, a growth of only 1.11 percent over the same period last year. At the same time, exports to the United Kingdom and Canada increased by 11.89 and 28.42 percent respectively to reach more than 2.39 billion dollars and 77.41 billion dollars.
In addition to conventional markets, garment exports to non-traditional markets increased by 32.19 percent from $305 million to $404 million over the same period of the previous year. Among non-traditional markets, Japan grew by 42.54 percent to over $754.7 million. Exports to India also increased significantly by 50 percent, amounting to around $548.9 million.
However, BGMEA director. Mohiuddin Rubel said that although there is a positive growth in the export of garments made in major countries in the statistics, the growth has decreased compared to the previous months of the current financial year. This indicates that growth may slow further in the coming months.
