Police have arrested 8 people on charges of extorting consumer rights officers.

The arrested are - Md. Shaheen alias Balla Shaheen (25), Md. Yusuf Chowdhury (28), Md. Abdul Alim (23), Md. Mamun Kazi (32), Md. Delwar Hossain (26), Sultan Mahid Piyas (33), Md. Tushar (31) and Md. Rahad (28).

 
They were arrested from Mirpur Dakshin Pirer Bagh area of the capital on Friday (February 04) night.

The police took legal action against them in court today (Saturday). The court granted them a one-day remand.

Balla Shaheen

  • Mohammad Mohsin said, Balla Shaheen along with the rest of the accused went to an establishment called Al Baraka Bakery in South Pirer Bagh at around 9 pm on Friday. He went there and introduced himself as an officer of the Consumer Rights Department and demanded Tk 50,000. If they refuse to pay this amount, they allege that there are various problems in the bakery and threaten to sue and fine them.
    At one point, the bakery employees gave 13 thousand 500 rupees. But they were displeased with it and abused. Meanwhile, an employee of the shop called the police and reported the matter. The police went and arrested Balla Shaheen and his entire group.

OC Mohammad Mohsin said that in 2020, Balla Shaheen and his associates extorted police in Mohammadpur. A case was filed in their name in this incident. Also, there are 4 cases in the name of Shaheen on various charges including drugs, extortion, attempted murder. There are 3 against Sultan Mahid Piyas. Apart from this, there are two cases each in the names of Yusuf Chowdhury, Abdul Alim, Mamun Kazi, Delwar Hossain and Rahat. They were brought to court today with legal action against them. The court granted them a one-day remand.
