What is the position of BNP in Jamaat, Nai Japatat movement?
BNP seems to be taking a political strategy of avoiding Jamaat in the anti-government movement ahead of the upcoming national elections. BNP has not yet held any formal discussion with Jamaat regarding the program of simultaneous movement. Jamaat is not in any new alliance formed after breaking the 20-party alliance.
Jamaat-e-Islami did not participate in any program after December 24 and 30, even though it announced to participate in the movement simultaneously with BNP. The party will hold its rally on Saturday in the divisional cities on 10 demands, including the return of caretaker government system during the election.
The issue of distance with BNP is also clear in the speech of Jamaat's publicity secretary Matiur Rahman Akand. He also informed that Jamaat will not participate in BNP program without discussion.
Several top leaders of BNP said that they have no plans to discuss with Jamaat at the moment. Rather, there is an order to 'keep distance'. As a result, they 'don't think' about whether Jamaat has come to their program or not.
In 1999, BNP formed a four-party alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami, Jatiya Party and Islami Oikyajoto to build a movement against the Awami League government. Later Hussain Muhammad Ershad left the alliance but a part of the party formed a party called BJP and remained in the alliance.
