BNP-Police clash in Chittagong, 30 injured, 20 arrested
Attacks on police have taken place since BNP's protest march. The party's leaders and activists clashed with the police. Meanwhile, BNP activists set fire to a traffic police motorcycle in Kazi Deuri area. Also several shops were vandalized.
Chittagong: The incident took place on Monday (January 16) around 3:30 pm when the BNP procession was going to the party office from Kazi Deuri intersection.
Later, police deployed additional force and brought the situation under control.
Kotwali Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Atiqur Rahman, TI Biblab Sarkar and several policemen were injured in the clash, police said.
Eyewitnesses said that the demonstration called by the Center was going on in front of Nasimon Bhavan party office. BNP leaders and activists were going to the party office with a procession to attend the rally. As soon as the procession reached the Kazi Deuri junction, it attacked the police stationed there. This started a chase between the two sides. Meanwhile, a motor bike of the traffic police on the pavement was set on fire.
At least five policemen were injured in the sudden attack of BNP activists on the police. Later, additional police came and brought the situation under control. For half an hour the whole area turned into a battlefield. Around 4:00 pm, the police started raids around Kazi Deuri and arrested 20 BNP activists. Besides, a district police car was attacked by BNP activists when it was passing in front of Radisson Blu. A policeman was seriously injured. Meanwhile, the police fired mortar shells and live rounds to control the clashes.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) South Division Deputy Police Commissioner Mostafizur Rahman told Banglanews that BNP leaders and activists suddenly attacked the police.
