Powdered milk was imported with the announcement of electric motors
A company has imported more than 13,500 kg of milk powder from Dubai by declaring electric motor. The company is Padma Safety Products, Nawabpur, Dhaka.
Last Tuesday (March 28) the consignment was seized by the customs authorities after physical examination.
According to customs sources, a shipment from Dubai arrived at Chittagong port on March 13 declaring electric motor. After that, no initiative was taken from the importing company Padma Safety Products to redeem the consignment. Due to inconsistent information on the type of shipment and port of export, it was kept under surveillance by the customs authorities.
Later on last March 28, it was found that the consignment had 13,530 kg Nido brand milk powder instead of electric motor. As per rules, the duty rate on declared electric motors is only 26.20 percent. On the other hand, the duty rate of powdered milk is 89.32 percent.
In this regard, Deputy Commissioner of Customs Saiful Haque said that the government would have lost revenue of about 55 lakh rupees if the challan was cleared. Preparations are underway to file a case to bring those involved in importing products under the law by evading revenue by making false declarations.
