Gazipur city election may be scheduled on Monday
According to EC, General Election of Gazipur City was held on June 27, 2018. According to that, Gazipur City polling should be held by September 10. The first meeting of the elected corporation was held on September 11 of the same year. The countdown for the next election starts from March 11, 2023. As such, Gazipur City polling should be held by September 10.
Election Commission officials said that the schedule of Gazipur City elections may be announced next Monday (April 3). The EC has an obligation to elect this city within the next 180 days from last March 11. In addition, it is said that a decision may be taken on the selection of four more city corporations (Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet and Barisal) in Monday's commission meeting.
It is known that the meeting will be held at 11 am in the EC meeting room under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal.
Earlier, last Thursday, EC Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam told the media that five city elections will be decided in the next commission meeting. However, Gazipur City elections will be held first. According to the City Corporation Election Act, the term of the elected corporation is five years after the first meeting. And the next election should be completed within 180 days before the expiry of the term.
Although elections were held for Rajshahi City along with Gazipur City, the first meeting of the Corporation was held on October 11 that year. Therefore, the next general election will start on April 11. And the election should be held by October 10 of this year.
Khulna City General Election was held on July 30, 2018. The first meeting of the elected corporation of Khulna with Rajshahi City was held on October 11 that year. Therefore, the next general election will start on April 11. And voting should be done by October 10.
Election of Sylhet City Corporation was held on July 30, 2018. The first meeting of the elected corporation was held on November 7 of the same year. The countdown to the next general election will begin on May 6. And voting should be done by November 5 this year.
Besides, elections were held in Barisal City Corporation along with Sylhet City, but the first meeting of the elected corporation was held on November 14 that year. The countdown to the next general election will begin on May 14. And polling will be held by November 13 this year.
