Farmer's 5 taka cauliflower in the hands of traders 25 taka!
In the first week of this month, cauliflower was sold at the rate of Tk 6 per kg. Only two weeks have passed in between. Cauliflower price per kg has come down from 5 taka to 5 taka. As such, cauliflower is available for 1 taka 25 paisa per kg. The same is the case with cabbage.
Prices of more or less other vegetables have also come down. However, cauliflower and cabbage did not decrease so much. However, in the retail market, these two types of vegetables are still being sold at several times higher prices. At the same time the copy cabbage was sold as Rs.4. Currently, the price of that cabbage has also dropped below half.
Mahasthanhat is the biggest place for vegetables in Bogra, famous for its granaries. A huge amount of vegetables are imported at this place every day from early morning. Almost all what is meant by winter vegetables is available in this place.
Talked to several farmers and traders who came to Mahasthanhat to know about the reason for the fall in prices. In their words, wholesale is one of the reasons for the decrease in the price of vegetables.
Farmer Afshar Ali told BanglaNews that favorable weather is necessary for vegetable cultivation. This time it was maintained from start to finish. Because of this, vegetable cultivation has been good. More yield than expected. Due to this, more vegetables are being imported than the demand in the local market. Another farmer named Hazrat Ali told BanglaNews that Mahasthanhat is one of the best places for vegetables in the northern region. And people involved in agriculture certainly recognize this. However, this position has a holding power. This time due to the bumper yield of all kinds of vegetables, farmers are bringing vegetables from far and wide in the hope of higher prices on this occasion.
He also said that the traders are taking advantage of the import of vegetables more than the demand. Farmer Hazrat Ali added that he is buying vegetables at low prices.
These farmers also said that they are facing huge losses due to this.
According to sources in the office of the Deputy Director of the District Agriculture Extension Department, various vegetables have been cultivated on 12 and a half thousand hectares of land in the district during the current winter season. The production target has been fixed at 280 thousand metric tons. But due to the bumper yield of vegetables, the stakeholders expect the production target to exceed 3 lakh metric tons by the end of the season.
Wholesale vegetable buyer Mustafizar told BanglaNews that a large amount of cauliflower and cabbage is being imported every day. This time because the weather is good, there has been a bumper yield of these vegetables. Farmers are not getting the price of the crops due to the fact that so many flowers and cabbages are coming to the market at the same time.
Another vegetable buyer named Aminul Islam told Banglanews that it is not possible to keep the vegetables in the land when it is the right time to pick them. It cannot be stored at home. Because vegetables rot. So the farmer has no option but to sell vegetables. This buyer believes that this is one of the reasons for the low price.
Traders Badshah Mia and Rafiqul Islam told BanglaNews that even if they buy vegetables from farmers at a low price, they have to keep in mind the issue of profit in addition to the additional rent, high cost of transportation. Due to these reasons vegetables have to be sold at two to three times higher prices in the retail market.
People associated with the market said that apart from flowers and cabbage, various types of fresh vegetables including carrot, tomato, beetroot, potato, radish, green pepper, onion, gourd, brinjal, different types of vegetables are available at this market. Traders from different districts and upazila cities including the capital Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet come to this place to buy these vegetables.
At present, an average of 70 to 80 taka of vegetables go to different parts of the country from this market every day.
