Canada will celebrate International Mother Language Day, Bill passed in Parliament
A bill has been passed in the Parliament of Canada to celebrate February 21 as 'International Mother Language Day'. Apart from Bangladesh, Canada is the first country in the world to recognize International Mother Language Day. As a result of the passing of the bill, International Mother Language Day will be officially celebrated in the country every year from now on.
The 'International Mother Language Act' was passed in Canada's House of Commons on Thursday (March 30). Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa has informed this information in a circular.
The notification said, 'On this auspicious occasion, we respectfully remember the contribution of the late Rafiqul Islam and Abdus Salam, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in recognizing 21 February as International Mother Language Day in 1999 by UNESCO and later by the United Nations.'
The bill was introduced in Parliament by Ken Hardy, a member of the House of Commons. Senator Mobina S Zafar, who supported the bill, and Khalilur Rahman, High Commissioner of the Bangladesh Embassy in Canada, were also present at the time.
The High Commission says the passage of the bill is evidence of Canada's commitment to linguistic and cultural diversity. This bill reminds that language is an essential element of human identity and cultural heritage. Respecting, protecting and enhancing language diversity is our responsibility.
