Bangladesh has been elected as a member of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) for the period 2024-2028.
Bangladesh won the membership unanimously in the election held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Wednesday (April 5). In addition to Bangladesh, Belgium, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Mali, Bolivia, Romania, Brazil and Colombia have been elected members of this organization.
In a response, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh Ambassador Mohammad Abdul Muhith told the media that Bangladesh is a role model for gender equality and women's empowerment. This victory is recognition of Bangladesh's achievements in gender equality, women's rights and empowerment.
The main global intergovernmental organization of the United Nations is the Commission on the Status of Women. It consists of 45 member countries. The organization works specifically for gender equality and women's empowerment. A week-long session of this body is held every year at the UN headquarters. At this time, member states, civil society and other stakeholders have identified the existing challenges in assessing the progress of achieving global gender equality, setting global standards and formulating specific policies on global gender equality and women's empowerment.
Note that Bangladesh has worked as a member of this commission for the period of 2019-2023.
The Permanent Mission says Bangladesh is committed to furthering gender equality and women's empowerment programmes. As a member of CSW, it is an excellent platform to highlight Bangladesh's achievements in gender equality and women's empowerment globally and share best practices with other member states.
