The gas distribution companies of Bangladesh have proposed to increase the gas prices.
The new price they have proposed to the regulator is almost double the current price. However, the application was returned by BERC as it was not in accordance with the rules. Then again two agencies submitted similar proposals.

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman Md. Abdul Jalil told BBC Bangla, "We sent back the applications of the laws and regulations that we have to propose, as they were not in accordance with those provisions. But today again two organizations have prepared the documents and submitted the proposal.
"Now our evaluation committee will verify them. If the proposal is accepted, a public hearing will be held for all parties. Whether the price will increase, what will happen - it will be correct in the public hearing,'' he says.
The government says that there is no option but to increase the price of gas in Bangladesh as it gradually becomes dependent on imported LNG.
However, there are differences of opinion among experts on the rise in gas prices. Some feel that the gas price hike is unreasonable at this time. According to some, prices should be adjusted to keep pace with the international market.
However, common consumers fear that if gas prices are increased after electricity and oil, it will make their living conditions like this. The proposal to increase gas prices by two times, Jinia Rahman, a resident of Dhanmondi, uses two stoves for pipeline gas. Therefore, he has to pay 975 rupees every month.

The new gas price hike is almost identical to the one proposed by the supply companies, with residential users proposed to increase from Tk 9 36 paise to Tk 20 35 paise per cubic meter. In other words, Jinia Rahman has to pay two thousand 100 taka for two stoves.
"Already, the price of all things in the market has increased. Vegetables, rice, transport, electricity, water - the price of everything has gone up, so I can't afford it. "If the price of gas rises so much now, then we will have to stop cooking," Jinia Rahman told BBC Bangla.
