The Cabinet has given final approval to the draft of the Medicines Act 2023. 10 years sentence for unlicensed production of drugs under this; Possession or adulteration is punishable by life imprisonment.

The final approval of this law was given in the cabinet meeting today Monday (February 6) under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Before this, a cabinet meeting was held at the Prime Minister's office.

At the end of the meeting, the Cabinet Secretary in the briefing at the Secretariat. Mahbub Hossain told reporters this information. He said, earlier the law was about medicine. This Act focuses on cosmetics.

Earlier in August 2022, the cabinet approved the draft of the 'Drugs Act, 2022', providing for a 10-year jail term or a fine of Tk 10 lakh or both for producing adulterated and unlicensed drugs.

  • Khandkar Anwarul Islam was the cabinet secretary at that time. He informed that the draft law has mentioned how the drug administration will be, the rules for licensing the sale and import of drugs. The draft law also spelled out the punishment for violating license conditions.
