The militant group Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. Eyewitnesses said that they attacked military bases in Jalalaksi and Boulobarde cities of Hiran. Sinab Abdullahi, a shopkeeper in Jalalaksi, said that a suicide car bomb exploded at a checkpoint of the state forces near the bridge. One person was killed and 6 people were injured in this attack. However, the country's police and state officials did not comment on the attack. Hussein Abdiasis, another resident of Jalalaksi, said government forces tried to stop the attackers by firing at a car carrying a second explosive. He said, "After the first explosion, we heard the sound of gunshots and then another explosion." Al Shabaab has been insurgent against the government of Somalia since 2007. The organization aims to enforce Islamic law strictly. In 2008, the United States designated al-Shabaab as a terrorist organization.
Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared war on al-Qaeda-linked militants soon after he was elected last year. The country's government claims that around 2,000 al-Shabaab members have been killed in military operations supported by international partners.
