Russia has prepared about 2,000 tanks and 300,000 troops for a new offensive to seize Ukraine's eastern Donbas region next week, a Ukrainian intelligence official has warned.
The offensive is expected to be bolstered by thousands more armored vehicles, artillery systems, as well as hundreds of fighter jets and helicopters.
The long-awaited Russian offensive has already begun and is expected to accelerate as the symbolic date nears, military analysts claim, amid an escalation of the war.
A Ukrainian military official told Foreign Policy News, "We expect a new, massive offensive within the next 10 days."
Ukrainian military intelligence believes Russia now has more than 300,000 troops inside the country, nearly double the number it had on its borders before the war began.
According to Kiev's estimates, the Russian military has prepared 1,800 tanks, 3,950 armored vehicles, 2,700 artillery systems, 810 Soviet-era multi-launch rocket systems, 400 fighter jets and 300 helicopters for the new offensive.
"They don't care about any casualties or damage (on the battlefield)," the official said.
General Valery Gerasimov was appointed by the Kremlin last month as the overall commander of Russian forces in Ukraine. He is expected to focus efforts to liberate the remaining Donbas regions in Donetsk and Luhansk. So far, Russian forces have managed to liberate increasingly complete areas around Bakhmut in Donetsk and Kreminna in neighboring Luhansk.
Luhansk regional governor Serhii Haidai said on Thursday that Russia had launched a major offensive in an attempt to break through Ukrainian defenses near Kremina.

Analysts at the US-based Institute for the Study of War said Russia had retaken the area of Luhansk, possibly after deploying several highly-trained army divisions to the region.
