Prime Minister calls on all able to pay taxes

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday urged the countrymen to pay taxes and emphasized on the need to collect more taxes besides increasing the number of taxpayers to overcome the global economic crisis.

He said, "Those who are able to pay taxes not only in the capital or the city, but all over the country, please pay your taxes." The government will use your money for your services and welfare.'

  The Prime Minister said that due to the global economic recession, the prices of everything including oil, gas, wheat, edible oil, sugar have increased. Our Awami League government is still buying them at a higher price. There has also been an increase in transportation costs, the $800 ship fare is now $3,800. We are buying at higher prices with subsidies and giving them to the people of the country at lower prices. One crore people have got TCB card, people are being supplied with daily necessities at subsidized prices, government is subsidizing agriculture, government has given incentive package to businessmen to keep industries and factories running during Corona. This is how the government continues to subsidize everyone in times of trouble.

The Prime Minister directed the concerned authorities to work with sincerity and professionalism in expanding the number of tax payers instead of increasing the amount of tax and to conduct mass awareness campaigns across the country to encourage people to pay taxes.

At present, the contribution of income tax to the total revenue collected by the Board of Revenue is about 35 percent. Welfare-oriented and people-friendly tax legislation is one of the tools for establishing equality and justice in society. In the post-Covid-19 context, comprehensive business and investment-friendly tax policies, enforcement of tax laws, elimination of socio-economic disparities and IT-friendly policies have been adopted.
