The entire Bengal is suffering from lack of doctors. There are not even enough people to monitor the sale of drugs. Monitoring of online drug sales is also hampered by lack of manpower.

Medicines are being sold online through advertisements like food or clothes. Not only local, there are also foreign medicines. Various discounts are also given.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Vice-Chancellor Professor Sharfuddin Ahmed said, apart from common medicines, diabetes, high blood pressure, infertility and even heart and stroke medicines are being sold.

At present several private marketing companies are selling various types of medicines online. Managers of some such companies like Sukant Sardar or Pankaj Sharma said that when a customer mentions medicines for cancer, insomnia, mental disorders, tuberculosis, etc. online on their website, they are delivered to his home. This medicine is going mainly from the retail medicine seller in different areas.

Selling is going on by opening a page on Facebook or social media under various names. There is no way to know from where and how these medicines are collected. As a result, there is a fear of fake or adulterated drugs going into the hands of the buyer.

Director General of Medicines Administration Department Major General Mohammad Yusuf said that they want to stop the sale of medicines online to ensure safe medicines. Advertisements cannot be given.

The Drug and Cosmetic Act does not say anything about regulating the sale of medicines online. Because when that law was introduced, there were no online pharmacies. A week and a half ago, the 48th Drugs Consultative Committee meeting with drug controllers of all states was held in Delhi. There is a consensus on creating guidelines for online pharmacies. Accordingly, a sub-committee was formed with the drug controllers of Mumbai, Delhi, Karnataka, Odisha. They will prepare guidelines for online pharmacies by the third week of this month.

The Medicines and Cosmetics Act 2023 has been approved by the Cabinet. This law is supposed to be passed in the next parliament session.
