Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has pardoned thousands of the country's prisoners. On Sunday, Iran's state-owned media reported Khamenei's conditional pardon of prisoners.

Among these prisoners are many arrested for taking part in recent protests in Iran. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei announced this pardon to the prisoners on the occasion of the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The death of the Kurdish girl

  • Protests spread across Iran last September over the death of Masha Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish girl in the custody of police in Tehran.


Various human rights organizations claim that more than five hundred protesters were killed during the protest. At least 70 of them were minors. About 20,000 protesters were arrested.

According to the Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA), founded by Iranian human rights activists, protests spread across Iran in September over the death of a 22-year-old Kurdish girl named Masa Amini in the custody of police in Tehran. After that, the police arrested more than 20 thousand people. Some of those arrested have been convicted of various crimes and sentenced to death. In the meantime, at least five people have been hanged.

According to the BBC, the Deputy Head of the Department of Justice, Sadeq Rahimi, explained what to do to get Ayatollah Khamenei's pardon.

He said those to be considered eligible for a pardon must pledge in writing that they are sorry for what they have done. Or they will not be released.
