Right-handed opening batsman Shubman Gill is showing great rhythm with the bat. He became the eighth cricketer in history to score a double century in ODIs. Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan were on their way to an explosive innings against New Zealand. He now holds the record for fastest 1000 runs in 50 over cricket for India.
Hosts India won the toss and batted first in the 1st ODI of the series in Hyderabad on Wednesday. In the scheduled 50 overs, they accumulated a huge capital of 349 runs for 8 wickets on the scoreboard. The real credit behind Paharsam Collection is 23-year-old Gill. In the completed over of the innings, Henry Shipley scored 208 runs before being dismissed. 19 fours and 9 sixes came from his bat against 149 balls.

Gill became the 5th Indian batsman to score a double century in ODIs. Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan have previously achieved such a feat in this edition. He hit the milestone in the 49th over by hitting Kiwi pacer Lockie Ferguson for three consecutive sixes. He had to face 145 balls for his double century.
Gill opened his account by hitting Ferguson for four off the third ball he faced. After touching fifty off 52 balls, he gave breath to the wheels of the run. Reached the century off 87 balls. Moving forward at the same pace, Gill completed his 150 off 122 balls. In the end, his bat became an open sword. The bowlers of New Zealand were confused by that. Gill played just 23 balls to go from 150 to double century.

The aggressive innings cost him life twice. Wicketkeeper Tom Latham failed to stump after dropping his catch for 45 runs in the 19th over. Then he survived another round in the 38th over. Pacer Shipley could not collect his return catch for 124 runs.
Gill scored another century in ODIs in two consecutive innings. It took 24 innings for Kohli and Dhawan to score 1000 ODI runs in Indian jersey. Gill left them behind by batting only 19 innings. He was 106 runs away from the time of going to the wicket that day.
Gill is joint 2nd in the list of fastest cricketers to score 1000 runs in 50 over cricket. Pakistan's left-handed batsman Imam-ul-Haq took the same 19 innings. Another Pakistan left-handed batsman, Fakhar Zaman, holds the record for the fastest 1000 runs in this edition. It took him only 18 innings.
