Germany's approval, Ukraine is getting warplanes
The German government has officially approved the delivery of five Soviet-designed MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine at Poland's request. Germany's Defense Minister gave this information on Thursday (April 13). Al Jazeera news.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in a statement, "We all of the central (federal) government have reached this decision jointly. I welcome the matter.'
The German government's permission is required to send the warplanes still in Poland's fleet to a third country. For this reason, the country requested Germany to send warplanes to Ukraine.
German Defense Minister Pistorius said that this request was made by Poland on Thursday. "You can count on Germany" to prove approval on the day of the request, he said.
In 1990, Germany received 24 MiG-29 fighter jets from the then East Germany on the basis of 'inheritance'. At that time MiG-29 was known as the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world.
In 2004, the German government gave 22 MiG-29 fighter jets to neighboring Poland. And one of the remaining two crashed. And that one MiG-29 is now kept in a museum in Germany.
Meanwhile, the Washington Post, citing leaked documents from the Pentagon, said that the United States believes that neither Russia nor Ukraine will make much progress on the battlefield this year. The war will start in 2024. Ukraine will also field the last member of the country's reserve and regular army to break the deadlock.
Western countries have so far been reluctant to provide Ukraine with advanced fighter jets. Such as the US-made F-16. But some countries are moving away from this position and giving Ukraine old fighter jets like MiG-29. However, the military of Ukraine is already using this warplane in the war.
