EVM voting slow, worries EC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said this to the reporters after a discussion meeting on various issues related to joke voting in the conference room of Agargaon election building on Wednesday (January 11).

He said, you already know why we called the meeting. The election that was held in Rangpur City Corporation a few days ago, the election was beautiful, fair and participatory. But some crisis has been mentioned. Some of the complaints we were getting were due to the media. For example, slow voting was a major complaint. In some cases the fingerprints did not match. Why is the vote being delayed, a complaint we have never received before. This made us very worried. We decided then and there that we would address these issues to those who observed the election, those who worked there as media liaisons and our election officers who managed the election from there, in a session and get their feedback.

CEC said if we don't hear from you directly. So the crisis for us is because we have got some things, we haven't got the whole thing yet. I will review them and try to overcome the problems. At the same time, I am telling you (media workers) that we did not find these problems in other elections. Some of the things our media partners said seemed reasonable. Either way feedback was needed. We took it. We will discuss the feedback among ourselves. We will try to overcome them as much as possible through discussion. We need transparent elections, participatory elections, competitive elections. There are these things we expect. You have always helped us in this regard. Always cooperate.

In response to a question from the journalists, he said, "We have technical experts here, media associates, they have highlighted the real fact. There has been a delay." Now I will talk to the technical experts, why it was late, why it was not met. But I said that the fingerprints did not match - no, the matching did not happen very often. It's late though. The delay can be due to many reasons. But we still don't know these things properly. We will think deeply. I will try to determine by experiment.

Four Election Commissioners, EC Secretary and senior officers are present in the exchange meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal. Apart from this, the recently concluded Rangpur City Corporation Election Returning Officer, Assistant Returning Officer, news gathering journalists and election observers were present in the election.

On December 27, polling was held in Rossi. Polling was supposed to take place till 4:30 PM, but due to slowness, it went on till around 8:30 PM.
