America and Germany are finally ready to send modern tanks to Ukraine

After months of indecision, the US and Germany finally decided to send tanks to help Ukraine. They hope that if these tanks are in the hands of Ukraine, they can turn the tide of the war. The British media BBC gave this news.

US

• President Joe Biden's administration is said to announce plans to send at least 30 M1 Abrams tanks. German Chancellor Olaf Scholtz is said to have decided to send at least 14 Leopard 2 tanks. Russia's ambassador to the United States described the news as a "direct provocation".

Ukrainian officials say the tanks will help regain territory lost to Russia on the battlefield. The United States and Germany have long ignored internal and external pressure to send tanks to Ukraine.

Washington says operating the state-of-the-art Abrams tank requires extensive training and maintenance. On the other hand, Berlin fears that by supplying tanks, NATO is getting involved in a direct war against Russia.

Defense analysts believe that such a fleet of weapons could turn the tide of the war in Ukraine.

According to the US media, the US was informally informed by Germany that if Washington sends M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, Germany will also send Leopard 2 tanks.

Citing an unnamed source, US media reported that 30 tanks could be sent. German Chancellor Olaf Schulz has been under pressure since last year to send Leopard two tanks

"If the Germans say that if the Americans send the Abrams, they will send the Leopard, then we need to send the Abrams," Chris Coons, a senator from the ruling Democratic Party of the United States and an ally of Biden, told the news outlet Politico.

•  has already said it will send Challenger Two tanks to Ukraine. Poland said this week it wants to send two Leopard tanks to Ukraine. Since these tanks are made in Germany, Berlin has to approve their export.

According to data from the International Institute for Strategic Studies, at least 16 European and NATO countries have Leopard 2 tanks. Not all of them will send tanks to Ukraine. But Schulze's apparent decision means they can send whatever they want.

The BBC's defense correspondent, Jonathan Beale, said that Ukraine believes it can win the war if it gets 300 modern tanks. But they are unlikely to get the tanks they need, Biel said.

But if half a dozen Western countries each provided 14 tanks, that would bring the number of tanks closer to a hundred, which could make a difference in the war.
