The Myanmar junta declared Suu Kyi's party dissolved
The junta has declared the dissolution of the National League for Democracy, the political party led by Myanmar's ousted and jailed pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. On Tuesday, the election commission of the junta-controlled country announced the decision to dissolve Suu Kyi's party.
The election commission has announced the dissolution of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy after it failed to re-register under Myanmar's new strict military electoral draft law, state-run media reported.
The NLD, which won an absolute majority against military-backed parties in the 2015 and 2020 elections, will be 'automatically deregistered as a political party' from tomorrow (Wednesday), according to Myanmar television channel MRTV.
The army claimed that the NLD came to power through massive fraud in the 2020 elections, but could not provide any evidence. Myanmar's military seized power in February 2021, ousting the Suu Kyi-led government through a coup on these charges.
This marked the end of 10 years of democratic government in Myanmar and chaos began across the country. Last January, the junta government gave the country's political parties a two-month deadline to re-register under a tough new electoral law drafted by the military.
The junta government has promised to hold new elections in the country, calling for parties to register ahead of those elections. But the country's opposition politicians say the election will not be free or fair.
Last month, Myanmar's junta announced the extension of the two-year state of emergency imposed across the country for another six months. Elections were promised to be held by August, but were postponed in February. The junta postponed the election saying that it did not have proper control over the entire country to organize the vote.
According to a local monitoring group in Myanmar, more than 3,100 people have been killed in law enforcement violence in the country since the coup. Besides, more than 20 thousand people were arrested at the same time.
