Former Pabna MP Arju in jail in rape case
The tribunal has ordered to send Khandkar Azizul Haque Arju alias Farooq, former Member of Parliament (MP) of Awami League of Pabna-2 Constituency, to prison in the case of rape and cheating of a divorced woman by concealing her identity.
On Wednesday (February 22), she surrendered and applied for bail in the court of Judge Begum Samchunnahar of Dhaka Women and Child Torture Prevention Tribunal-5.
After the hearing, the judge rejected his bail application and ordered him to be sent to jail.
It is learned that the case was filed last year. The tribunal ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the case. PBI investigated and submitted a report stating that the allegations were proved. The tribunal took cognizance of that report and issued an arrest warrant against the accused. Today was the date for filing the Tamil report on the warrant. Accused Arju surrendered to the court today and applied for bail, after hearing the court ordered to send him to jail.
Earlier, on April 22 last year, an apprentice lawyer filed this case in the court. The tribunal accepted the statement of the plaintiff and ordered the PBI to investigate the allegations. After investigating the complaint, Police Inspector of Dhaka Metropolitan North PBI Sabbir Mohammad Salim filed a report in the tribunal on January 5 that the truth of the complaint was found.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff divorced her first husband in December 2000. He was working in a pharmaceutical company then. At that time he was living an almost lonely life at home. Then her relatives pressured her to get married again. At one point in late 2001, the plaintiff met the defendant through his uncle. Later the defendant kept in touch with the plaintiff and tried to attract him and eventually succeeded.
