DSCC appeals not to spread rumors about the fire
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has alleged that some unscrupulous individuals and vested interests are trying to link the footover bridge disconnection initiative to the Dhaka New Super Market fire.
South City Corporation made this complaint in a press release sent to the media on Saturday (April 15) afternoon.
According to the notification, the pedestrian crossing bridge (footover bridge) connected to Dhaka New Market was declared dangerous last year. Placards were then posted declaring the bridge unsafe and the bridge was closed. But later he removed the barrier and people were moving, which is very unsafe. In this situation, following the official process, on April 12, the contractor was appointed to disconnect the market from the bridge. Following this, the second floor of the market was disconnected from the bridge on April 15 from 2 pm to 5:15 am and the Corporation ended its operations on that day.
Meanwhile, according to media sources, the fire broke out at 5:50 am. So there is no apparent or invisible connection between the disconnection operation of the bridge completed more than half an hour before the fire started.
Still, some vested interest groups indulged in mischievous attempts to link the fire with the removal of the bridge. The isolation of the bridge by the Corporation has not the least connection with this fire. Reason:
1. The fire broke out at a distance of more than 400 feet from the bridge isolation site.
2. The Corporation did not use any gas cutters for decommissioning the bridge. The bridge was dismantled using wheel excavators. And Corporation officials, DPDC officials were present at the isolation site so that the operation could be completed safely. Apart from this, the electricity connection of the bridge was disconnected even before the disconnection of the market with the bridge.
Any type of accident including fire is not desirable. However, minimizing damage and ensuring safety of life and property in such accidents is an absolute priority. All related government agencies including Selakshya Fire Service, Police Army, RAB are working tirelessly.
Therefore, in this most difficult time of disaster, all concerned including businessmen are called upon to refrain from spreading baseless news and rumours. Rather, we all come forward to find the real cause of the fire. Dhaka South City Corporation thinks that only then the media will be able to play a more responsible role.
