35 killed while worshiping at Baleshwar temple
Ramnavami puja was going on from Thursday morning at the Baleshwar Mahadev Jhulela Temple in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India.
This temple has an old stepwell. The slab was placed over the well. So that the devotees can stand on it and watch the puja. The slab broke at around 12:30 pm. Many people fell into the well.
The local administration said that the police, disaster management team and fire brigade were dispatched to the area immediately after the incident. After about 18 hours of rescue work, 35 bodies were recovered. 14 people were rescued with serious injuries. Two people returned home after receiving first aid at the hospital.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that how this incident happened, whether there was any negligence on the part of the temple authorities, is being investigated. An inquiry committee has been formed. The cause of the accident will be investigated. The government has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the dead and Rs 2 lakh to the families of the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he had spoken to the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh over the phone. Condolences to the families of the deceased.
