The Prime Minister said this at the 28th anniversary celebration of Bangladesh Coast Guard. Today (Monday) morning, the establishment anniversary ceremony was held at Agargaon Coast Guard Headquarters.
Sheikh Hasina said that Bangabandhu enacted a law in 1974 to specify the rights that Bangladesh has in the Bay of Bengal. This law has not yet been passed in the United Nations. This law was passed by the United Nations in 1982. Bangladesh is the first country in South Asia to pass this law.

The Prime Minister also said that we have vast coastal areas as we have seas. It is absolutely essential to provide all kinds of security in this region, to use all the resources in our economy. After coming to power after 21 years, we took steps to ensure the rights we have in this country. Those who illegally took over the government after 1975 did not take any initiative in this regard. I don't know if they had any idea about it or not.
Speaking on the occasion, he said, we have been able to achieve our vast maritime boundaries by maintaining friendly relations with India and Myanmar. Coast Guard forces are playing an important role in all the security of coastal areas including protection of our sea borders, fishing.
