Southampton coach Nathan Jones lost his job after just 95 days. Premier League club sources confirmed this information today.
The departure of former Luton Town boss Jones, 49, was confirmed after Saturday's defeat to 10-man Wolves. Southampton are currently at the bottom of the table with 15 points from 22 matches.
The Welshman will go down as Southampton's shortest-serving manager in Premier League history. Southampton have lost nine of 14 games under Jones, who was appointed on November 10. Among them, there are eight matches in the Premier League. The match at St Mary's was an embarrassing run of four consecutive home defeats.
Jones became the eighth Premier League manager to lose his job this season. Along with Jones, two first-team coaches, Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan, have also left the club. Ruben Selas will coach in the dugout for Saturday's Premier League match against Chelsea.
Southampton fans were in no way accepting their home defeat to Wolves on Saturday. Saints fans booed Jones at the end of the game. At that time, he was seen to leave the tunnel quickly. He hinted after that match that it might be his last game as Southampton coach. "I've never been in a situation like this before in my life," Jones said as he left the dressing room. In 390 career matches, this has never happened. But I still don't know what my future is here.
Jones succeeded Ralph Hasenhuttl in November. He left Championship side Luton on a three-and-a-half-year deal. Southampton lost four of their first five games under Jones. The only win during that time came against League One side Lincoln in the EFL Cup. Then in the space of a week, after victories over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup, Manchester City in the EFL and Everton in the Premier League, everyone assumed that Jones might be able to turn the club's fortunes around.
Jones had a successful two years at Luton.
