The incident took place in the state's Akola district around 7 pm local time on Sunday, when a religious ceremony was taking place in front of a temple there.

According to Indian media NDTV, fans took shelter under a tin shed when heavy rains and strong storms started. At this time, a huge old neem tree was uprooted by the wind and fell on the tin shed. Many devotees took shelter under that tin shed during the incident. According to the police, 35 to 40 people were trapped under the shed and seven of them lost their lives. Five more people have been admitted to Akola Medical College with injuries in this incident. They are being treated there.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the death and announced that the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government would provide financial assistance to the families of the victims.

Fadnavis said, 'This incident of people gathering for a religious function being crushed by trees and some devotees being killed is painful. I pay my respects to the victims." He further said, "Collector and Superintendent of Police immediately visited the spot and are coordinating the work to ensure timely treatment of the injured. We are in constant contact with them.

Earlier last month, 35 people were killed when the roof of a well collapsed in the premises of another temple in Maharashtra's neighboring state of Madhya Pradesh.
