Army airstrikes in Myanmar: Death toll rises to 133
Death toll in Myanmar army airstrikes rises to 133 Many women and children were among the dead. On Tuesday, the military bombarded these people who attended an event organized by opponents of the military regime.
According to the report, at least 133 people, including women and children, were killed in a military junta airstrike on a village in Myanmar, according to CNN, citing the country's shadow national unity government's human rights minister, Aung Myo Min. CNN reported on Thursday (April 13) citing CNN. Indian news agency ANI reported the information.
The attack, which took place outside Pajigi village in Kanbalu town in Myanmar's Sagaing region, is seen as the deadliest since the junta took power in a coup two years ago.
Another 50 people were injured in the attack, according to the Kyunhla group present at the scene, according to CNN News. Besides, at least 20 children were also killed in the attack. Human Rights Minister Aung Myo Min even complained that medical workers were prevented from reaching the attack site after the attack.
The affected Sagaing region is about 110 kilometers (70 miles) north of Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city. After months of fighting, the region has mounted fierce resistance against military rule.
Earlier, a spokesman for the military, Zhao Min Tun, confirmed the attack late on Tuesday. He said the security forces carried out the attack on an event organized by alleged opponents of military rule in the village of Pa Ji Gi.
Some of the dead were uniformed anti-coup fighters, he told news agency AFP. But 'there may be some people in civilian clothes'.
He blamed some of the deaths on landmines planted by the counter-coup, known as the People's Defense Forces (PDF).
Eyewitnesses told local media that the militant planes launched the attack by dropping bombs on the community hall in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Shortly after the bombing, they opened fire from the helicopter. This hampered efforts to rescue survivors at the scene.
