As per rules, the President is nominated by political parties and elected by the members of Parliament. Article 48(1) of the Constitution states that there shall be a President of Bangladesh, who shall be elected by the members of Parliament according to law.

A number of policy-making leaders of Awami League have said that there has been no formal discussion about the party's candidature in the presidential election. However, starting from the policy-making stage of the party, the names of several people are being discussed among the leaders and workers at various levels.
