Biden worried about plans to install nuclear weapons in Belarus
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently announced the deployment of strategic nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus. US President Joe Biden has expressed his concern in this announcement.
Biden told reporters at the White House on Tuesday (March 28) that Putin's statements are dangerous and worrisome.
Meanwhile, more than a year has passed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Moscow has occupied several cities in Ukraine. Recently, the two sides engaged in fierce fighting to take over the Donbas region.
The United States says that Russia does not yet have any plans to use nuclear weapons in this ongoing war.
Putin announced the deployment of strategic nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus on Saturday amid the Ukraine war. After his announcement, the West condemned Putin's plan.
"Belarus is forced to respond to Russia's plans to strengthen its own security and defense capabilities," Minsk's foreign ministry said.
The ministry also said Minsk was subjected to "unprecedented" political and economic pressure from the US and its allies. However, Putin said that even if nuclear weapons are installed in Belarus, they will keep their control in his hands.
So Belarus says that deploying weapons over which it will not control does not in any way contradict the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Belarus allowed Russia to use its territory as a launchpad for Moscow's offensive against Ukraine last year. The two countries have since held military exercises on Belarusian territory and increased cooperation between their militaries.
