The bail appeal hearing of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas will be held at noon. The 3rd phase of the case filed at Paltan police station on the charge of planning and inciting attack on the police is being heard today. First of all, they were taken to the court in two stages, but bail was not granted.
The question of BNP leaders and activists is whether their bail will be granted today. But today they will get bail, their lawyers are said to be praying.
Earlier on Wednesday, their lawyers applied for their bail in the court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Rezaul Karim. The court fixed Thursday for the hearing.
Mirza Fakhrul's lawyer Syed Zainul Abedin Mesbah said that Mirza Fakhrul is not an accused person in the case filed in Paltan Upazila for planning and inciting attacks on the police. Two accused in this case have been granted bail. BNP General Secretary is physically very ill. We hope he gets bail.
On the other hand, Mohiuddin Chowdhury said in the court of Mirza Abbas that Mirza Abbas is not the accused in the case. In this case, the two accused have been granted bail by the Metropolitan Magistrate Court. We hope he will also get bail today.
First, on Monday, the court denied bail to 224 activists including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and member of the party's Standing Committee Mirza Abbas.
On Friday, the police arrested Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas and produced their lawyers. Police Inspector Tariqul Islam, investigating officer of the case, requested to keep them in jail until the investigation of the case is over.
On the other hand, the defense lawyers filed a bail appeal. After the hearing of both parties, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim rejected the bail application and ordered to send them to jail.
They were arrested by the DB Police late on the night of December 8 amid the tension surrounding the BNP's mass meeting.
BNP leaders and activists clashed with the police in front of the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on the afternoon of December 7. One person was shot and killed. Many were injured.
