40 thousand (EVM) error: Colonel Syed Rakibul

Errors were found in 40,000 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) stored with the Election Commission. EVM Project Director (PD) Colonel Syed Rakibul Hasan said that the defective EVMs are being sent to Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory for repair.

He disclosed this information while talking to reporters after a meeting on EVMs at the Election Commission Secretariat in Agargaon in the capital on Wednesday (February 8).

Rakibul Hasan said, 'I have found errors in 40 thousand EVMs so far. Defective EVMs are being sent to Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory for repair. And 1 lakh 10 thousand EVMs are kept ready for voting.

He said that the project of buying new EVMs was not approved due to financial crisis. As a result, the Election Commission has to rely on the stocked EVMs. But we have calculated that the number of EVMs that are stocked, how many are usable now, and how many need to be repaired.

It should be noted that in 2018, the Election Commission purchased one and a half lakh EVMs at a cost of Tk 3,825 crore. City Corporation and most of the local government elections held in the last 5 years, including 6 seats of the 11th Parliament, were conducted through EVMs. EVMs are stored in more than 40 temporary warehouses in different districts of the country including 10 regional offices before and after the polls. But many EVMEs are now defective due to lack of adequate management. The Election Commission has found errors in 40,000 EVMs through continuous QC for the last 4 months.
