At least 28 people have been killed in two separate attacks by armed rebels in the African country of Burkina Faso. The dead included military and civilians. The governor of Seno, a province bordering Niger, made the announcement in a separate statement on Monday (January 30).

Armed attackers carried out these attacks on Sunday and Monday, the country's army and a regional governor said in separate statements on Monday.

  • In a statement, the military said a combat unit unit of the military was attacked near the border with Niger in the northern part of the country, killing 10 soldiers, two volunteers and a civilian.
    They said that after the attack ended, the dead bodies of 15 attackers were found at the scene.
    In a separate statement on Monday, the governor of the Cascades region, bordering Ivory Coast in the country's south, Col. Jean-Charles dit Yenapono Somme, said 15 bodies had been found after Sunday's attack. They are all civilians.

The governor said armed men stopped two vehicles carrying eight women and 16 men. They let the women and one man go. The rest of the men were killed.
The governor also said the armed insurgents had hijacked two vehicles carrying 8 women and 16 men and were fleeing. Later, everyone was rescued by stopping them.
