The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved a case against 23 people, including the director, chief engineer and GM of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, on the charge of causing a loss of Tk 1,161 crore up to the lease and re-delivery of two Boeing aircraft from Egypt.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved a case against 23 people, including the director, chief engineer and GM of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, on the charge of causing a loss of Tk 1,161 crore up to the lease and re-delivery of two Boeing aircraft from Egypt.

On Monday (February 6), ACC Secretary Mahbub Hossain highlighted the issue of this case to journalists.

He said that in 2014, Biman Bangladesh Airlines leased two Boeing 777-200 ER aircraft from Egypt Air (Egypt) under a five-year contract. But in 2012 there was irregularity in the tender process itself.

In these two planes, Egypt Air and the repair company had to pay Bangladesh Biman 1161 million taka in five years. On the other hand Biman was subsidizing 11 crore taka per month for two aircrafts.

Defendants in approved cases

  • They are - Biman Bangladesh Airlines Limited former director of flight operations Captain Inrat Ahmed, former deputy chief engineer Shafiqul Alam Siddique (SA Siddique), general manager (printing and publishing) Abdur Rahman Farooqui, former principal engineer of services and audit Shahid Uddin Mohammad Hanif, former principal Engineer (MCC&LM) Debesh Chowdhury, cab consultant Golam Sarwar and cab engineer officer. Sadekul Islam Bhuya, Biman Bangladesh Airlines DGM Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Chief Engineer ARM Kaiser Zaman (Principal System Eng (Structure) Sharif Ruhul Quddus, Captain Md. Nazrul Islam Shamim, Deputy General Manager (AOC, ACP) Zia Ahmed, Chief Purser ( Retired) Kazi Mosaddeq Ali, flight passer Md Shahidullah Kaiser Duke and Biman Bangladesh Airlines Limited Deputy General Manager Corporate (Planning) Md Azad Rahman.

According to the statement of the case, the two aircraft were leased for 5 years but after operating for only 11 months of the lease, the two aircraft were leased from February to August 2015.
