Prohibited cultivation of poppy is taking place in the grounds of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology

In the name of beautification, poppy cultivation is prohibited in the grounds of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology. But the university administration does not know anything. The garden caretaker claims that these trees were brought from different local nurseries. And the nursery is coming from India. Meanwhile, the law and order forces say that they have reached the field to identify the suppliers of illegal poppy plants and seeds.

The red flowers are swaying in the wind, the petals of some of them have fallen and the fruit is also caught. But these are forbidden poppy flowers, which are used to make all kinds of terrible drugs. The garden of Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology is covered with such numerous poppies.

The fruit of the poppy plant is used as one of the raw materials for drugs like opium, heroin and morphine.

Shamim Ahmed, head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Techniques of RUET, said that although its cultivation is prohibited in Bangladesh, it is not known how it came to the university.

And garden attendant Mahbub Mali says, this tree came along with other trees brought from the nursery. On the other hand, nursery workers say that seeds often come from the Indian border.

Rajshahi Narcotics Control Directorate Deputy Director Md. Alamgir Hossain said that before this, the Narcotics Control Directorate had raided the government office of the city on the news of prohibited poppy cultivation. But the Narcotics Control Directorate has no information about how it is spreading.

Deputy Commander of Rajshahi RAB-5, Major Hasan Mahmud said, "Prohibited poppy seeds are being spread all over the country through various nurseries in the name of beautification, according to the law and order forces." Multiple teams are working to identify the cycle.
