Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction of the country's first underground metro line. He unveiled the inaugural plaque at Purbachal Sector 4 of Rupganj at around 11 o'clock on Thursday.
He was accompanied by Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastgir Gazi, Member of Parliament Shamim Osman and project stakeholders.
Metrorail line
- Metrorail Line-1 depot will be constructed at Pitalganj in Narayanganj district. DMTCL has contracted with Japan's Tokyo Construction Company Limited and Max Infrastructure Limited of Japan for this work. The entire project will be implemented through 12 packages.
It is known that the government will construct underground and aerial MRT Line-1 of 31.241 km between Airport-Kamalapur and Purbachal-Natun Bazar-Rupganj Pitalganj route for the first time. DMTCL will implement this mega project.

According to the details of the project, MRT Line-1 will take 24 minutes to reach Kamalapur from Dhaka Airport. It will take 20 minutes to reach Purbachal from New Bazaar with a stopover at 12 underground stations and seven flyover stations.
Another part will be the elevated expressway; That part will be absorbed from the new market. There will be a total of 9 stations in this stretch of 11.36 km.
The government has a target of completing the metro rail project with a total length of 31.241 kilometers by the year 2026. 52 thousand crore rupees will be spent on the construction of this subway. Japanese debt is 39 thousand 450 crores. And the remaining amount will be met from government funds.
