11 people died of heat stroke at an open-air government awards ceremony in India. Besides, many others have also fallen ill due to heat-related health problems in the same event. Many of these sick people have been admitted to the hospital.

Indian media NDTV said in a report on Monday (April 17) that this incident took place in the western state of Maharashtra, India.


Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said 11 people died of heat stroke while sitting under the open sky in the scorching sun at the state's Maharashtra Bhushan Awards ceremony on Sunday. He also said that about 50 more people have been admitted to the hospital with heat-related health problems.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was present as a guest at the award ceremony and after receiving the news, he went to the hospital to visit the sick.


According to Indian media, the official award ceremony was organized in a grand manner. But the real thing is not available! The prize distribution ceremony was held during the day in scorching heat, but there was no shelter over the heads of the thousands of people who came.

The Maharashtra Bhushan Award distribution ceremony was organized at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra on Sunday. At least 11 people died there due to intense heat and heat wave. More than 120 people fell ill. Many of them were taken to hospital.


After this incident, common people raised their finger of complaint towards the administration. The government has been accused of negligence for the death of 11 people.


In a statement issued by the Maharashtra Home Department on Sunday, 11 people died of heat stroke while attending the Maharashtra Bhushan Award distribution ceremony organized at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai. At least 120 people have fallen ill. Many of the sick were immediately rushed to the Tata Hospital in Kharghar.


According to the media, the event was organized to reward a social activist from Maharashtra. Indian Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the award. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis were also present on the occasion.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde immediately went to Tata Hospital after receiving the news. He also announced that compensation of Rs 5 lakh will be given to the families of those who died of heat stroke while attending the event. The Chief Minister has also ordered to arrange proper treatment for the sick.


Basically, this prize distribution ceremony started from 11:30 am on Sunday and lasted till 1 pm. However, the common people attended the prize distribution ceremony since morning. As the day progressed, the surrounding area became more crowded. But there was no canopy over the head.

The event was held in Navi Mumbai and the day temperature was recorded as a maximum of 38 degrees Celsius.
