What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a type of fat. It looks almost waxy. It resides in the cell walls of our body. When we eat fatty foods, this cholesterol is produced in our liver and spread through the bloodstream to all the blood vessels in our body. It helps in various functions required by the body. For example, in the production of hormones, in the digestion of fat-soluble vitamins and in the production of vitamin D.

If high amounts of fatty foods are consumed, this excess cholesterol builds up in the artery walls, forming plaques and restricting blood flow. As a result, various physical problems are seen. For example: high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attack etc.

There are generally (two) types of cholesterol. One is low density lipoprotein (LDL) and the other is high density lipoprotein (HDL).

If a large amount of fatty foods are consumed, this excess cholesterol builds up in the walls of the arteries, forming plaques and obstructing blood flow. As a result, various physical problems are seen. Such as high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attack etc.
